8 Fashion Terms You Must Know! Fashion Dictionary

Your cheat sheet to fancy Fashion Lingo

Speaking fashion-ese isn’t the easiest thing. Silent letters, French pronunciations, all gear up to make you either look like a expert if you get them right, or like an absolute idiot if things go otherwise.

To make it slightly easier for you, here’s a quick guide to some of the most popular fashion terms you’ll find designers and influencers throwing around like confetti.

Haute Couture

Fashion houses in the business of haute couture clothing primarily design and retail exquisite clothes or shoes that are custom-made and exclusive. Next time someone says, “Blake Lively was spotted in Chanel Couture at Cannes”, you’ll know what that means.

Prêt-à-porter

Or in simpler terms, “Ready to wear” is any collecting of clothing which is bulk-manufactured in standard sizes, unlike haute couture. You can find Ready-to-wear clothes from fashion shrines like Dior, to more accessible brands like Zara.

Pop-Up Shop

Pop-up shops are temporary retail stores. These places are usually known to display and sell collection for a few days to some weeks. You’ll also find quite some promotional events and brand campaigns happening at pop-up shops. (you must be aware abpout Pernia’s pop-up shop)

Capsule Collection

These designer collections are basically a bunch of basic clothing pieces which can be paired up with each other. We’re talking permutations and combinations! The TOMMYXGIGI collection you saw your favourite fashion bloggers sporting a few months back was a capsule collection by Tommy Hilfiger in collaboration with Gigi Hadid.

Lookbook

While the word has been thrown around by almost every fashion enthusiast displaying their latest shopping hauls, we’d like to tell you that a lookbook is a terms referring to a set of images a designer puts out to showcase his/her upcoming collection. If a fashion house or brand does not organise runway shows, you’ll most likely find a lookbook of its collection, showing how to style the new products.

Sartorial

Even though it sounds rather fancy, sartorial is simply associated with clothes. The tailored style or manner of the dress is basically referred as Sartorial.

Trompe l’oeil

An art technique that also inspires fashion, Trompe l’oeil designs have an element of optical illusion. While there have been more complicated designer pieces, the easiest example of a Trompe l’oeil design would be a shirt collar sewn into a sweater, making it look like you’re wearing layers.

Silhouette

After all that heavy fashion-vocab, we’ve saved the easiest for the last. Silhouette simply means the basic shape or outline of a garment. Like a skater dress has an A-line silhouette.
